March 2020

President’s Report

Mal

Hi everyone,
A lot has been happening lately!

Activations
February has seen a continuation of increased activations, and in the first three weeks of the month we have already done 8 (excluding training), as many as the whole month last year. You can read all about them HERE.

Our Vessels
Coral Sea Marina VMR1 was out of the water for a couple of days for maintenance to fix a vibration on one side (now rectified), and Whale Song VMR2 really showed its credentials as a worthy backup, with three activations in one day (it was nearly five!) including one of over 6.5 hours in what can politely be described as less than ideal conditions.

The trailer for Whale Song VMR2 has arrived, and that will allow us more flexibility in responding to incidents in the wider area.

SAREX here in May!
VMR Whitsunday is hosting a major Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) for the VMR Northern Zone in the Whitsundays on May 15, 16 and 17. The exercises will start on the late afternoon and evening of the 15 th and conclude about lunchtime on the 17th . The SAREX will be coordinated by the Whitsunday Water Police, and we will have vessels attending from Coastguard Townsville, VMR Burdekin, VMR Bowen, ourselves of course with 2 vessels, VMR Midge Point, and VMR Mackay. We also plan to have involvement from the QAS, SES and MSQ, as well as the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter from Mackay.

Keeping up with technology
Coral Sea Marina VMR1 will soon have its new iPad, which will be used for backup navigation, and to provide FLIR (infrared) camera display when operating from the lower helm. The waterproof case ordered from Hong Kong has been delayed due to flight disruptions caused by the virus outbreak in China, but it is now en route.

Our meat raffles are proving popular!
Some of our volunteers are conducting meat raffles at Dingo Beach Hotel every Friday evening, with good results. Our thanks go to the Dingo Beach Hotel for their support in allowing us to fundraise, it is much appreciated. Also thanks to everyone who drops a coin in a tin. Recent pick-ups revealed $100.65 from the Night Owl at the bottom of the street and $272.90 from the one at the top.

Early news coming about our BIG event for 2020
Keep an eye out for more details on a MAYDAY function which is in the final stages of planning for Friday, May 1st . There will be some great prizes and auction items up for grabs, and it should be a great night. Put the date in your diary.

Kind regards,
Mal Priday
President, VMR Whitsundays
